Shiva is part of the Hindu Trinity which includes Lord Brahma (the creator) and Lord Vishnu (the preserver). Lord Shiva is known as the destroyer…a perfect theme for the new year! As we look at 2011 to make resolutions and re-commit to living happier, more fulfilled lives we think about “destroying” or shedding old habits for healthy ones.

Shiva is known as a destructive god, capable of wreaking havoc and burning away impurities but more importantly Shiva is also a god of creation, and considered a god of truth, goodness, and beauty. Shiva aids with change destroying ego and shedding of old habits and attachments.

So as you look to commit to your new year’s resolutions maybe invoke a bit of Shiva — to destroy those old habits, shed away 2010 and embrace a new you!

February Focus: Bhakti Yoga

A beautiful, devotional practice, Bhakti Yoga is a dedication to love. Some see love in God, a higher power, their family or thier pets. Bhakti Yoga’s sanskrit root is derived from the verb root bhaj which meanings include “to share in”, “to belong to”, and “to worship.” Where are you manifesting love in your life? Where are you sharing with others? How can you inspire love every day on and off your mat? Not just “surface” love but deep, empowering, passionate love. Love that takes you places, connects with your soul and inspires greatness. Love that changes the world on breath at a time.

Focus of the Month: Change

As we enter a new decade we find that change is all around us. Call it a resolution, a revolution or a mindful intention, this is the time of year change is all around us. Yet as we look at change in ourselves, we should also embrace those elements of our being that make us beautiful. The core “truths” that are inherent to each and every being are what make change possible. So as Ghandi said, “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” And draw from your own, personal inner light to make it true. You have everything you need, just take a breath and look inside.
